Rebelle nabs Oscar nomination for best foreign language film

For the third time in three years, Quebec will be represented in the Oscar category for best foreign language film. Kim Nguyen’s Rebelle (War Witch) received the green light as nominations were announced in L.A. Thursday morning. Nguyen will be competing against Michael Haneke’s Amour (Austria), Pablo Larraín’s No (Chile), Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s Kon-Tiki (Norway) and Nicolaj Arkel’s A Royal Affair (Denmark).

Rebelle tells the story of child soldiers in sub-Saharan Africa. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February, where it won a prize from the Ecumenical jury and Rachel Mwanza won best actress; it went on to win best film at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, where Mwanza again took best actress.

Another Quebec film, Yan England’s Henry, was nominated for best short film; Sam French’s Buzkashi Boys, produced by Montrealer Ariel Nast, was also nominated in the category.

The Academy Awards take place Feb. 24. Click here for more on the Oscar Nominations.
